Full Story

Located in Sirutar, Bhaktapur, we have the capacity of 35 children living with us. Our aim is to create a safe space for the children to understand their past and prepare for the future, while having them fully live in the present. The journey that starts with rescue leads to an environment where education and life skills are prioritized. Our focus is not just for children’s independence, but to make them good human beings and manpower capable of leading with purpose, skill and compassion. This is how life looks like inside the home:

1. Counseling

Trained counselors work with every child individually and in groups, helping the children process what they’ve been through, understanding their needs and finding a language for what they carry. At the heart of NNSC sits the family environment filled with the charm of the children, and in order to honor every child’s right to be seen in a safe space, mental health is woven as a non-negotiable necessity in the daily life of the home.

2. Skill workshops and trainings

NNSC designs career guidance workshops and various training sessions that prepare children for the world beyond the home. Career guidance opens up conversations about what a working life might look like. For older children at the edge of making course distinctions based on possible career trajectory, this helps them make decisions that are in their best interest. Thus, each session is chosen with intention: not to fill time, but to add to a child’s sense of what they are capable of and what they want to do.

3. Non-academic enrichment activities

Whether it is music, art, sports, cooking, crafts, NNSC values the necessity of activities chosen not for academics but for joy, curiosity, and the discovery of what each child loves. Children write poems, stories, sing songs, play musical instruments, spend time with books at the library, use computer labs, play different sports and spend time in the kitchen exploring culinary recipes on their own. Some of the children are also involved in leadership clubs in their schools, the learnings of which they share to everyone in the home.

4. Ground Diaries

The ground reality of different professions are often overlooked. Beneath the surface, professionals have to carry out various responsibilities that become their daily routine. Half of the responsibilities people carry out are often not even job-related. Understanding the situational and structural demands of professional lives from the very beginning is crucial. We have had doctors, designers and engineers share such realities with the children, and through dialogues and discussions, the children get to know about adult lives involving a multitude of factors.

5. Agriculture

NNSC sits on the outskirts of Bhaktapur, where we tend around 3 ropani of agricultural land, growing our own vegetables and involving the children in every part of the process. From planting to harvest, they learn that patience and care are rewarded in ways no classroom can replicate. One of the most beloved parts of this work has been mushroom harvesting. The children check on them every morning, watching something small and quiet become something worth celebrating. What grows here is never just food.

6. Excursion/Recreation/Travel

NNSC carries out recreational activities on a regular basis for making the environment of learning enriching for the children. From the hills of Sailung to the plains of Janakpur, children travel to places, explore and return with a piece of the place with them, thus enriching in meaningful journeys. They also gather meaningful experiences from short hikes, museum visits, theatre and movie productions, and nearby excursions.

Following are some of the highlights of the recreational activities carried out with the children:

  • Janakpur trip
  • Shilpi theatre visit
  • Sailung trip
  • Pokhara trip
